Lucknow, Aug. 30 -- Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh on Sunday paid tribute to Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi by unveiling her statue, lauding her courage, patriotism, and supreme sacrifice during the 1857 War of Independence, which marked a "glorious chapter" in India's history.

Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh said that Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi took charge of her kingdom under extremely difficult circumstances and set an exemplary example of good governance. When the British tried to treacherously occupy her kingdom, she refused to surrender. She not only took up arms herself but also inspired neighboring rulers to join the struggle against British rule.
