Kolkata, Oct. 27 -- A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Montha late yesterday, triggering widespread weather alerts across South Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Alipore, has warned of heavy rain and strong winds in several districts as the system continues to move towards the coastline at a speed of around 13 kmph.
According to the IMD, the cyclone formed around 11:30 pm yesterday over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal after the weather system strengthened over the past six hours.
As of now, it is positioned 640 km east-southeast of Chennai, 710 km southeast of Kakinada, 740 km west of Port Blair, 740 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, and 860 km south of Gopalpur.
