Unnao, Feb. 19 -- A 65-year-old cricket umpire died after being attacked by a swarm of bees during a match in Unnao district, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The incident took place at Rahul Sapru Ground under the limits of Gangaghat police station.

The deceased, Manik Gupta, was a resident of Kanpur and had been serving as an umpire with the Kanpur Cricket Association (KCA) for nearly 30 years.

According to eyewitnesses, a beehive was present at the ground. After the Under-13 league match concluded on Wednesday, Gupta was sitting near another field when a large swarm of bees suddenly attacked. Players and officials ran for safety, but Gupta fell while trying to escape. He was stung more than 50 times over nearly 10 minutes.
