New Delhi, April 9 -- The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday lodged a strong protest with the Election Commission of India over what it described as the large-scale deletion of voters from electoral rolls in West Bengal following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), alleging that the exercise has led to "mass disenfranchisement" and denial of the constitutional right to vote.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby expressed "anguish, grave concern and strong protest" over reports that more than 90 lakh voters - roughly 12 per cent of the state's electorate - have been excluded from the rolls.
