Kozhikode, July 15 -- A construction worker died of asphyxiation and another person was critically injured after being trapped in an under-construction waste tank in Muttoli, Kozhikode on WednesdayThe deceased has been identified as Siraj Puthukkudiyil, 40.
Siraj became trapped and asphyxiated after entering an eight-foot-deep, under-construction waste tank to retrieve tools.
Because the tank only had a narrow two-foot opening, oxygen was limited.
A nearby worker, Sunil Viswanathan, entered the tank to rescue Siraj but was also overcome by toxic fumes and knocked unconscious. Both men were pulled out by Fire and Rescue Services in a 30-minute operation, but Siraj was declared dead, while Viswanathan is undergoing treatment.
