Mumbai, Sept. 9 -- With the post of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Legislative Council falling vacant after the end of Ambadas Danve's tenure, the Congress has staked its claim to the position.

The party is citing its numerical strength in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, and Congress Legislative Council group leader Satej Patil is likely to be appointed if the claim is accepted.

For the first time in the history of the Maharashtra Legislature, both Houses-the Assembly and the Council-are without a Leader of Opposition.
