Amravati, Feb. 24 -- A political row has erupted in Maharashtra's Amravati over the former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya chairing a meeting at the Amravati Municipal Corporation concerning alleged irregularities in the issuance of birth and death certificates.

City Congress president Bablu Shekhawat has written to the municipal commissioner seeking an explanation on which authority allowed a former parliamentarian, who currently holds no official position, to chair a municipal-level meeting.

He also questioned why key office-bearers including the deputy mayor, leader of the opposition and group leaders of other parties were not invited to the February 20 meeting .
