Lucknow, March 31 -- Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, a Rajya Sabha MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition, has launched a sharp attack on both Naxalism and what he described as rising communalism in the country.

Tiwari on Tuesday asserted that the decisive fight against Naxalism was initiated by the Congress party, which, he said, made the "highest sacrifices" in this battle.

He recalled that several senior Congress leaders, including former union Minister Vidya Charan Shukla, lost their lives while combating Naxal violence in Chhattisgarh.

He described Naxalism as a "dangerous poison" for the nation but added that communalism is equally harmful.
