Bengaluru, March 22 -- In a decision that has triggered political buzz, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Sunday went ahead with fielding Samarth Mallikarjun from Davanagere South, brushing aside strong demands from sections of minority leaders for a Muslim candidate.

Several minority leaders reportedly had met the Congress high command, arguing that the growing minority voter base in the constituency warranted representation, and pressed for a Muslim face to be fielded.

Senior party leader and minister Zameer Ahmed Khan had also reportedly issued a strong warning, stating he would resign if Muslim leaders were not given adequate representation in the bypoll ticket distribution.
