Khliehriat, April 7 -- Coal miners in Meghalaya today served a three-month ultimatum to the state government to formulate a scientific mining policy tailored to the region's unique land tenure system and geological conditions.

The ultimatum was served by thousands of coal miners and workers gathered under the banner of the Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealers Association (JCMDA) during a public rally held here in East Jaintiq Hills district.

"We have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wherein we have served a three-month ultimatum to the government to formulate a scientific mining policy tailored to the state's unique landholding system and geological conditions," JCMDA vice-president Justine Dkhar said.
