Bengaluru, July 2 -- Communication managers may now control access to athletes, but they have neither controlled what players say nor weakened the bond between sportspersons and journalists, former India hockey player MM Somaya and hockey coach Sjoerd Marijne asserted on Thursday, while urging coaches to treat media criticism as constructive feedback rather than a reason to abandon their long-term vision.
Speaking on World Sports Journalists Day organised by Sports Writers Association of Bangalore (SWAB) the two hockey stalwarts rejected suggestions that increasingly managed media interactions have made athletes less candid, saying communication managers have merely streamlined engagements without compromising honesty.
