Pune, March 8 -- Citizens Social Foundation on Saturday welcomed the Maharashtra government's move to initiate steps for introducing a law to curb illegal religious conversions in the state.

The organisation said it had earlier urged the government to enact the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion (Prevention of Fraud and Coercion) Act in view of alleged incidents of illegal religious conversions.

Following indications during a recent cabinet meeting that such legislation may be introduced, the foundation expressed support for the move.

A press conference was held at the Pune Shramik Patrakar Sangh to thank Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for announcing the government's intention to bring the law.
