Hyderabad, Sept. 21 -- Senior Congress leader and former union Minister Chinta Mohan on Monday announced centenary celebrations in Tirupati to commemorate what he described as the historic entry of a Dalit into the Tiruchanur temple in 1925.
Addressing the media at the Press Club in Somajiguda here, Chinta Mohan said a Dalit man entered the Tiruchanur temple near Tirupati and performed Karpura Harathi on October 13, 1925. He was subsequently arrested under Section 295 and detained in the Tirupati sub-jail, he said.
According to Chinta Mohan, Congress leader Chakravarti Rajagopalachari appeared before the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate and argued for the man's release.
