N'Djamena, July 28 -- Chad has formally notified the UN of its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the Hague-based tribunal of political bias and disproportionately targeting African countries, reports RT.
The Chadian Foreign Ministry announced the "sovereign decision" on Monday following what it described as a comprehensive review of the court's record since it became operational in 2002. Under the Rome Statute, Chad's withdrawal will take effect one year after the notification.
In a statement, N'Djamena argued that the ICC's effectiveness had been "limited and uneven", claiming that nine of the 13 investigations it reviewed involved African countries.
