Kolkata, June 9 -- : In a major boost to rural infrastructure and welfare in West Bengal, the Narendra Modi government has approved the construction of 10 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and sanctioned a total of Rs 1,700 crore for rural housing, roads, pensions and employment schemes in the state.
The approvals come shortly after the formation of the new government at the Centre and are expected to provide a significant stimulus to Bengal's rural economy.
The PMAY allocation marks a breakthrough in a long-standing dispute between the Centre and the state over rural housing funds.
The Centre had suspended allocations under the scheme in 2022 citing widespread allegations of irregularities.
