Hyderabad, Sept. 17 -- The 78th Hyderabad Liberation Day was celebrated in a grand manner by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, at parade grounds in Secunderabad today marking the liberation of Hyderabad from the Nizam's rule on September 17, 1948.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who was the chief guest, unfurled the national flag and paid floral tributes to the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Earlier, he paid homage to martyrs at the War Memorial. A parade by paramilitary and defence forces and cultural performances depicting the historic struggle of Hyderabad were the highlights of the celebrations.
