Parwinder SandhuNew Delhi, May 16 -- The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major overhaul of its language scheme for Classes 9 and 10 starting with the 2026-27 academic session, making it mandatory for students to study three languages in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
In a circular issued on May 15, CBSE said the revised framework will come into effect from July 1, 2026, and will require all Class 9 students to study three languages, referred to as R1, R2 and R3.
