Bengaluru, July 31 -- Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday sought postponement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's proposed visit to the state, saying the prevailing Cauvery water dispute required a "better atmosphere" for dialogue and not emotional reactions or protests.

Shivakumar said Karnataka would request Vijay to defer his August 3 visit as tensions have risen following the Cauvery Water Management Authority's (CWMA) decision upholding the release of 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

"It is his duty to protect the interests of Tamil Nadu and it is our duty to protect the interests of Karnataka. Both states should try to resolve the issue amicably," Shivakumar told reporters at Vidhana Soudha.
