New Delhi, March 17 -- union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday presented a comprehensive account of the Railways' performance in the Lok Sabha including progress made on the country's first bullet train project scheduled to be operational by 2027.
Highlighting financial and operational gains, Vaishnaw said the national transporter has achieved significant savings through energy transition. "By shifting from diesel to electric traction, the Railways has saved around Rs 6,000 crore," he told the House, adding that energy remains the second-largest expenditure after staff costs.
He noted that diesel locomotives are gradually being phased out and will eventually give way to electric engines.
