Shillong, May 10 -- An unidentified body was retrieved from an abandoned flooded coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday, an official said.

The body was retrieved from a coal mine shaft at Moolait Bri Sumer village after local villagers alerted the police on Friday about a body floating inside the abandoned coal mine.

"A police team conducted a spot inquiry and found the body in a floating condition and it could not be retrieved on as the mine shaft was deep," Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, the district police chief East Jaintia Hills, said.
