New Delhi, July 25 -- Bharatiya Janata Party's first woman Mayor of Delhi, Shakuntala Arya passed away on Saturday, she was 98.

Arya was elected as the Mayor for the 1997- 98 term, and was a resident of Lajpat Nagar, South Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and BJP's state unit chief Harsh Malhotra have expressed sorrow on her demise, while Gupta has said that hearing the news was heartbreaking.

Taking to social media platform X, Gupta stated that Arya's commitment to Delhi's development and public service, as well as her dedication to the organization, will always be remembered with respect.
