Mumbai, Feb. 11 -- BJP woman corporator Ritu Tawde was elected unopposed as the Mayor of Mumbai on Wednesday, becoming the second BJP corporator to hold the post after 44 years.

The main opposition Shiv Sena (Uddhav Bal Thackeray) chose not to field a candidate against her. She's known for her assertive stance on civic issues and advocacy of Marathi identity. The mayoral post was reserved for a woman this time.

The election of a BJP corporator as Mayor for the second time marks a significant shift in Mumbai's political landscape, ending the 25-year dominance of Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
