Ranchi, June 29 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday questioned the Jharkhand government over teacher vacancies, alleging that the appointment of 1,000 assistant teachers was insufficient in view of the large number of vacant posts in the state.

Addressing a press conference, BJP state chief spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo said the appointment of 1,000 assistant teachers accounted for only about two per cent of nearly 50,000 vacant teaching posts and urged the government to fill the remaining vacancies.

Shah Deo alleged that thousands of government schools in the state were functioning under in-charge principals as regular appointments had remained pending for years.
