Kolkata, March 6 -- The political confrontation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls intensified in West Bengal on Friday with the BJP sharply criticising Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for staging a protest at Esplanade.

Addressing the media at the BJP's state headquarters in Kolkata, former Rajya Sabha MP and senior party leader Swapan Dasgupta accused the Chief Minister of attempting to derail the electoral roll revision process initiated by the Election Commission of India. Dasgupta described the dharna programme as "politically motivated" and alleged that it was aimed at creating obstacles in the SIR process rather than safeguarding democratic interests.
