Patna, May 21 -- Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh on Wednesday announced honour legendary middle-distance runner and the state's first Olympian Shivnath Singh.
Addressing a review meeting of the Sports Department at Vikas Bhawan, Singh said here that Shivnath Singh's outstanding achievements would be formally recognised and his life and contributions showcased to inspire future generations.
She noted that the athlete had won gold and silver medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran and represented India at the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Olympics. His marathon national record, set in 1978, remained intact for nearly four decades. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award.
