Hyderabad, April 1 -- Former Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao has urged the Central Government to confer the Bharat Ratna on Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the Indian National Flag.

Marking the anniversary of the National Flag's creation, Hanumantha Rao hoisted the Tricolour at his residence in Amberpet and paid floral tributes to a portrait of Pingali Venkayya.

Speaking on the occasion, he recalled that Venkayya had designed the flag following a suggestion by Mahatma Gandhi.

Stating that Venkayya's contribution to the nation remains unparalleled, Hanumantha Rao said it is the responsibility of the Central Government to honour such a distinguished figure with the country's highest civilian award.
