Kolkata, June 21 -- Highlighting West Bengl's long association with ports, river trade and shipbuilding, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the state has a crucial role to play in the country's maritime future.

The Prime Minister, who commissioned three indigenously built ships for the Indian Navy at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port here, used the occasion to project West Bengal as a key driver of India's maritime and defence manufacturing ambitions.

Modi said the state was at the forefront of India's resurgence.
