Mejia (Bankura), July 17 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced that his government would move to legalise lifting stone from quarries in parts of West Bengal's Bankura district to safeguard livelihoods and bring the sector under a transparent regulatory framework.

Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for Shyam Steel Group's Rs 15,000-crore expansion project at Mejia, Adhikari said residents of Saltora in Bankura had long depended on open-cast stone quarries for their livelihood, and the government was committed to resolving long-pending issues affecting the sector.
