Kolkata, June 27 -- Kalicharan Banerjee, the arrested former aide of ex Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, was remanded to police custody till July 4 by a city court on Friday. He was arrested in connection with Wednesday's Taratala tea warehouse tragedy which has so far claimed 16 lives.

Banerjee was presented before the Alipore Court during the day.

Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghoshal informed the court that Banerjee used to facilitate the approval of flawed building plans in exchange for money and moved a plea for a 14-day police remand in the interest of the investigation.

Banerjee's lawyer claimed that there was no evidence against him.

After hearing both sides, the judge remanded Banerjee to police custody for 11 days.
