Biswabrata GoswamiMidnapore, May 26 -- A team of researchers from Vidyasagar University, Botanical Survey of India and Lady Brabourne College have developed an eco-friendly natural fibre from a rattan palm species that may emerge as a sustainable alternative to synthetic surgical sutures and industrial composite materials.
The study, recently carried by the reputed publication Journal of Polymers and the Environment, identified fibre extracted from Calamus viminalis - a species of climbing rattan palm - as a highly durable, biodegradable and biologically compatible material with promising biomedical applications.
