Kolkata, June 10 -- West Bengal's new Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay on Wednesday promised to restore the state's educational prestige within five years, alleging that the sector had suffered extensive damage under the previous government because of corruption and a decline in academic standards.

Speaking on his first day in office after assuming charge of the department, Chattopadhyay said a preliminary assessment had convinced him that higher education was among the worst-affected sectors in the state.
