Kolkata, April 6 -- A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a stern warning of expulsion, Farakka's outgoing MLA Monirul Islam withdrew his nomination and stepped back from contesting the upcoming Assembly election as an independent candidate.

Monirul had earlier announced his decision to enter the fray as an independent after being denied the party ticket.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded Amirul Islam from the Farakka constituency this time, a move that triggered resentment from the sitting MLA.

He had even indicated that he might contest as a Congress candidate amid uncertainty over Congress nominee Mahatab Sheikh's nomination due to alleged procedural complications.
