Kolkata, April 29 -- About 80 per cent of the 3.21 crore plus voters turned up to register their democratic choice, braving intermittent rains, as West Bengal headed towards a massive turnout in phase two of the Assembly elections covering 142 seats, with the authorities describing the polls as "largely peaceful", notwithstanding some isolated incidents.
Data shared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) put the overall voting figure at 78,68 per cent.at 3 pm, eight hours into polling.
The trends indicate that voter participation could approach the record levels seen in the first phase on April 23, when 93.19 per cent of the electors pressed the EVM buttons.
