Kolkata, June 4 -- West Bengal's rural development department is set to launch a special audit exercise of village panchayats across the state, Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh said on Thursday.
"We are launching a special audit of around 10% of the state's gram panchayats. The audits will start in those areas from where the largest number of complaints in terms of corruption have been received," Ghosh said.
Complaints of corruption have been rife across village panchayats in the state.
In West Bengal, there are 3,339 village panchayats.
A panchayat and rural development official on Thursday said that the first phase of the audits will be carried out in 10% of these panchayats.
