Kolkata, May 24 -- In a significant development, the West Bengal government has directed all districts to set up "holding centres" to detain people suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants or Rohingyas.

According to the notification issued by Nabanna, such detainees can be kept in these centres for up to 30 days while verification and deportation procedures are carried out.

The state government said the centres would be used not only for newly detained suspects but also for foreign nationals who had earlier been arrested, jailed, and are currently awaiting deportation.
