Kolkata, June 22 -- The West Bengal government is considering setting up a greenfield second airport at Kalyani near Kolkata and has also proposed new airports in Purulia, Balurghat, and Malda.
Presenting the state Budget in the Assembly on Monday, Bengal's Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta earmarked Rs 10 crore for the aviation sector to support airport infrastructure and related development works for this financial year.
Dasgupta said the proposed Kalyani airport would require around 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land and is being planned to meet rising passenger demand in the Kolkata metropolitan region.
The government also plans to expand the existing airport at Cooch Behar.
