Snehal SenguptaKolkata, June 16 -- With the southwest monsoon approaching WestBengal, multiple government agencies across the state are scramblingto strengthen the stormwater drainage system by desilting canals,repairing pumping stations, clearing clogged drains and reinforcingvulnerable embankments.
Senior officials from the state Irrigation Department, Public WorksDepartment (PWD) and urban local bodies involved in the exercise saidthe scale of the challenge had become apparent during recentinspections of drainage infrastructure across Kolkata and its suburbs.
"What should have been done over the past 10 years is now beingsqueezed into a fortnight," a senior Irrigation Department officialsaid.
