Kolkata, June 25 -- Two persons were killed in lightning strikes as heavy rains lashed Kolkata and several other districts in Southern West Bengal, inundating several pockets of the city and prompting the authorities to issue a red alert.

Two persons died when they were struck by lightning in East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas districts.

The red alert was issued in five districts - Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly - after they were pounded by heavy rains.
