Kolkata, Aug. 20 -- Tensions mounted at Bengal's premier state educational institution Jadavpur University on Thursday following clashes between supporters of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), with police and central forces deployed on the campus and adjoining areas.
The situation turned volatile during the afternoon after police stopped marches organised by both the ABVP and the SFI.
Members of the student organisations staged demonstrations on the road, allegedly breaking police barricades and even stopping school buses. The ABVP had called for a "Jadavpur Chalo" programme, while Left student organisations announced a counter-mobilisation.
