Siliguri, Aug. 6 -- As West Bengal observes Road Safety Week, the Siliguri traffic police have ended up performing a task that ordinarily does not fall within their mandate, they have temporarily repaired a road to prevent traffic from grinding to a halt.
The road in question is the Ghoshpukur Bypass, one of North Bengal's most strategic traffic corridors.
Near Siliguri, the bypass links NH-27 (formerly NH-31), the country's vital east-west corridor. It also serves as the junction with National Highway 327C from Kharibari.
Thousands of heavily loaded trucks use this route every day while travelling towards the North-Eastern states and the Indo-Nepal border at Panitanki.
