Kolkata, June 8 -- A late-night eviction drive by railway authorities at the Jadavpur station area triggered tension and clashes between protesters and security personnel shortly after midnight on Sunday, leading to the detention of several Left and Congress leaders and injuries to a number of demonstrators.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of Monday, saw bulldozers demolishing several alleged illegal shops and structures around the station premises.
Anticipating the drive, Left and Congress activists, along with local residents and hawkers, had gathered at the site from Sunday evening to oppose the eviction.
