Siliguri, Sept. 2 -- A mother elephant and her calf were rescued after both fell into a more than 15-foot-deep irrigation tank inside a tea garden at Kumargram in West Bengal's Alipurduar district in the early hours of Wednesday.
The mother was rescued first and fled into the nearby forest, while the calf was rescued later, leaving the two separated.
The incident occurred around 1 am when the elephants, apparently moving through the tea garden, fell into the deep water tank meant for irrigation. The matter came to light in the morning, following which the tea garden authorities informed the Forest Department.
