Kolkata, July 14 -- Political equations surrounding the observance of July 21 Martyrs' Day have taken a dramatic turn this year, with the Trinamool Congress split triggering uncertainty over the traditional programme, while the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) has stepped up preparations to reclaim the day with a major rally at Shahid Minar.
Amid the division within the Trinamool Congress, the "Nabya Trinamool' faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has sought permission to hold a gathering at the base of the Gandhi statue in Esplanade. The Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee faction of the party, however, is yet to secure permission for any venue for its annual Martyrs' Day programme.
