Burdwan, June 26 -- Three infiltrators from Bangladesh, during interrogation by the police, stated that they had 'purchased' voter ID cards against cash payment of Rs 1,000, each, which surprised the officials.

The detained Rafiq Sheikh alias Siraj, his wife Zarina Sheikh, and Hanif Sheikh from the same Mallikbagan locality in Satgachhia Panchayat area in Kalna, East Burdwan, were picked up yesterday after discrepancies in voter records came to light.

During questioning, Rafiq and Zarina allegedly admitted they crossed over from Bangladesh and got voter cards for Rs 1,000, each through local broker Selim Sheikh.

Rafiq claimed his name was changed from "Rafiq" to "Siraj" on the voter card, and it also lists him as "Miraj".
