Siliguri, Sept. 8 -- The flood situation in Bhutni area of Malda's Manikchak block situated in West Bengal turned grim on Tuesday as around 2.5 lakh people were left marooned after floodwater entered the island following a major breach in its ring embankment.

Thousands of people, including children, women and elderly persons, have been leaving their homes since midnight with their belongings and cattle and taking shelter on the existing embankment and other safer places.

The administration has decided to cut a portion of the embankment at Dakshin Chandipur on Tuesday to drain out the floodwater from the inundated Bhutni area. The decision came after appeals from political leaders and local people as the water continued to rise and rescue ...
