Kolkata, Aug. 3 -- Baruipur Police District has launched a grassroots intelligence-gathering initiative aimed at strengthening its human intelligence network and improving community policing in the wake of recent incidents that exposed gaps in local information flow.
The move follows the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl at Suryapur in Baruipur and the subsequent death of a youth in mob violence, incidents that triggered a political storm across West Bengal and raised questions over the effectiveness of police intelligence.
Senior police officers said the new initiative is designed to ensure that information reaches the police before local tensions escalate into law-and-order problems.
