Bankura, Nov. 2 -- Police Inspector Jayanta Pal, who was found dead on railway tracks in Bankura town on Friday last after being run over by an express train, had remained absent from his workplace for nearly 40 days without informing his colleagues, district police sources said.
He had returned to duty only on Thursday, a day before his death.
Pal, who was posted with the District Intelligence Branch (DIB) in Bankura, had reportedly been suffering from mental distress. His colleagues said he was reserved and rarely interacted with other officers.
They also recalled that he had frequently remained absent without explaining his whereabouts during his earlier posting at Katwa police station in East Burdwan.
