Kolkata, Oct. 12 -- At least 44 inmates of a government-run girls' hostel near Textile College More in Berhampore, Murshidabad, fell ill after experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting sensations and persistent dryness of the throat, triggering concern among students and parents on Monday.

Police have detained a cook for questioning following allegations that a narcotic substance was mixed with food served at the hostel.

The trouble reportedly began on Saturday night after the inmates had dinner. Several students developed similar symptoms, initially raising suspicions of food poisoning. Security guards subsequently took the affected students to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where some of them were admitted for treatment.
