Parmod KumarNew Delhi, July 20 -- The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on the Bar Council of India (BCI) over its recognition of law colleges allegedly operating out of "garages", while hearing a petition on the issue of whether a person facing a pending criminal case can be denied enrolment as an advocate by a State Bar Council.
The observations were made by a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and R Mahadevan during the hearing of a petition filed by a 50-year-old Chartered Accountant whose application for enrolment as an advocate was rejected by the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on the ground that a criminal case alleging conspiracy and cheating is pending against him.
