New Delhi, Sept. 3 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday held that the Bar Council of India (BCI) and State Bar Councils have no statutory authority to take disciplinary action against law students. The Court clarified that such disciplinary powers vest with the students' parent institution or the authority prescribed under the regulations or by-laws governing the institution.
The Bar Councils acquire disciplinary jurisdiction over a person only after they are enrolled as an Advocate.
